19.3 ordinal numbers

If ordinal numbers are not wrote out but written as a number, the are marked with a hight standing circle,
that' s the way we wrote them here. We only show the masculine form singular, obviously there is a feminine form and a plural form as well. We are going to see that in the next chapter.

In this list we notice as well some things that call our attention.

1)	The ordinal numbers until ten have a complete own form which does not derive from the cardinal number. Primo, secondo, terzo, quarto, quinto, sesto, settimo, ottavo, nono, decimo are forms we have to learn by heart.
2)	The ordinal numbers from 11 to 20 are formed by omitting the last letter and adding esimo.

undici => undic(i)esimo => undicesimo
tredici => tredic(i)esimo => tredicesimo
quattordici => quattordic(i)esimo => quattordicesimo
venti => vent(i)esimo => ventesimo

3) Concerning the ordinal numbers from twenty two hundred there are two possibilities. The first possibility is to write each component of a compound number as an ordinal number. This is by the way the Spanish solution.

But with big numbers we would get monster numbers and therefore is an alternative. The second way to form an ordinal number is by adding -esimo, -esimi, -esime to the cardinal number.

If the ordinal numbers are formed as in Spanish (in other words the cardinal numbers of a compound number are formed by forming an ordinal number of each number) we have the same problem as in the case of the cardinal number, one vowel can follow another. In this case, the first vowel is omitted.

If the ordinal number is formed on the basis of the cardinal number obviously all the rule mentioned before are to be applied.

4) Beyond hundred the possibility to form an ordinal number with each element of the compound cardinal number is not possible. Beyond hundred, at the contrary of Spanish, the only way to form an ordinal number is by adding -esimo / -esima / -esimi / -esime.
