In Italy you have two 'o', a closed one and an open one. The open one is produced without rounding the lips. The mouth is more open than in the closed version. Pay attention to these examples. First, it is pronounced correctly, then wrong.

correct pronunciation (open o)
soglia = threshold
cosa = thing

wrong pronunciation (open o)
soglia = threshold
cosa = thing

Pay attention to the fact, that the lips are rounded, the mouth more closed than in the open 'o'.

conoscere = to know
ora = hour
