  2.7 The 'e'

In Italian there are two sounds represented with the letter 'e', the open 'e' (similar to a in the English word thanks) and a closed 'e' (similar to an American pronunciation of 'maple').

examples
   esercizio = exercise (closed 'e')
   ferro = iron (open 'e')

In this case the comment we made before, saying that the phonetic transcription is not so important in Italian than it is in French, must be reconsidered. From the writing you can' t deduce if the e should be pronounced as an open 'e' or a closed one. If you have never heard the word, the only way to find out how it is pronounced is the phonetic transcription which you find in every dictionary. Therefore, it is a good idea to memorize at least these two signs.
