10.3 the formation of the congiuntivo in Italian

In Italian there are four tenses in congiuntivo: The congiuntivo presente, the congiuntivo imperfetto, the congiuntivo passato and the congiuntivo trapassato.

But from a didactic point of view only two tenses are relevant, the congiuntivo presente and the congiuntivo imperfetto because the compound tenses of the congiuntivo, the congiuntivo passato and the congiuntivo trapassato are formed with the congiuntivo presente / congiuntivo imperfetto of the auxiliary verbs avere / essere, therefore they are very easy to learn. We add the past participle to the simple forms of the congiuntivo and finish.

As always we must distinguish between four different types of verbs. The verbs ending in -are, -ire, -ere. The ending of the infinitive (-are, -ere, -ire) is omitted. What is left is the radical and to the radical are added the corresponding endings.
