In this example the conditional is to be used if the introductory verb is in a past tense and the event / action will happen in the future from a point of view in the past. We repeat: In French and Spanish the condizionale I is used in this case, in Italian the condizionale II (Lui pensò che lei sarebbe venuta and NOT ~ Lui pensò che lei vendrebbe ~).
