  13.4.7 infinitive to abbreviate a subordinate clause part 2


As you can deduce from the table below there are more subordinate clauses that can be substituted by an infinitivo than with a gerundio. This is quite obvious. The gerundio doesn't reveal the relationship between the main clause and the subordinate clause and the possibilities to deduce from the context the kind of relationship is limited. In the case of a substitution with an infinitivo a preposition must be used in front of the infinitivo and this conjunction reveals the kind of relationship between the main clause and the subordinate clause. Any kind of subordinate clause can be substituted by an infinitivo.

modale clause
A forza di cercare lo scandalo, nulla scandalizza più.
By looking for scandals everytime, finally nothing is a scandal anymore.
concessive clause
Se n'è andato l'unico che diceva sempre quello che pensava, anche a costo di farsi odiare.
The only one who always said what he thought even at risk to become impopular has gone.
causal clause
Entrò nel mondo del cinema nel 1974 ed era molto scontenta di quanto poteva fare a causa di essere una donna.
