  17.5.6 sopra = on, thereupon

Once again we have to distinguish between the adverb (pronominal adverb) and the preposition. In English the pronominal adverb has its own form (on it, thereupon). In Italian there is no difference between the adverb and the preposition. Besides that there are two prepositions with the same meaning: su and sopra.

prepositions
Mettilo sopra la tavola. (Mettilo sulla tavola.)
  Put it on the table.
adverb
  Mettilo sopra. (Mettilo su.)
  Put it thereupon.
