21.2 Stare / essere

If you don't speak Spanish Italian is the first language you know, which has two words for the English verb to be.

Mio padre sta in casa oggi. Ha la febbre.
My father is / stays at home today. He has a fever.
Mio padre è un ingegniere, lavora per la Fiat.
My father is an ingenieur, he works at Fiat.

We see therefore that one time to be is to be translated with essere (è) and one time with stare (sta). So we want to know when stare is used and when essere.
