Impietosito, Geppetto cede a Pinocchio la propria cena

Il burattino, afflitto e sconsolato, sfoga col padre l’angoscia della notte trascorsa e il falegname, commosso, gli offre le tre pere che ha con sé. La reazione del burattino stupisce però il padre: nonostante la fame, Pinocchio vuole infatti mangiare solo frutta sbucciata e priva di torso. Appena finite le pere però il burattino si rassegna a sgranocchiare anche i resti della frutta. A quel punto Pinocchio chiede al padre di fargli dei piedi nuovi. Dopo alcune promesse del figlio, Geppetto decide di esaudire il suo desiderio. Appena riavuti i piedi Pinocchio manifesta la propria gratitudine al falegname promettendogli di andare scuola. Geppetto provvede allora a fabbricargli un vestito nuovo di cui il burattino è subito entusiasta. Immediatamente però i due realizzano che a Pinocchio manca per la scuola un Abbecedario, per il quale né l’ uno né l’ altro hanno il denaro necessario. Pinocchio è così triste che Geppetto si rassegna a vendere il proprio cappotto per accontentarlo.

Pinocchio is so distressed that Geppetto reconciles himself to selling his own cloak to please him.
