La pesca dei merluzzi

Terranova, Newfoundland, è una delle maggiori isole dell’America settentrionale e, si può dire senza tema di esagerazione, è quella che offre maggiori ricchezze di tutte, non solo per le sue acque, che sono immensamente ricche di pesci, fra i quali primeggiano i merluzzi e le aringhe.

The cod fishing

Newfoundland, Newfoundland, is one of the larger islands of North America and, without exaggeration, one of the largest, not only in the water, is extremely rich in fish, with cod and herring dominating.

E situata di fronte al Labrador, dalla cui terra è separata dallo stretto di Belle Isole, fra il 46° e il 51° e 46’ di latitudine nord e il 54° 5l’ e 62° di longitudine ovest. La sua superficie, che tocca gli 85.000 chilometri quadrati, è assai irregolare, frastagliata da penisole molto pronunciate, da un grande numero di baie, da piccoli porti, da cale e insenature, entro i quali possono comodamente ripararsi le navi, essendovi dovunque acqua profonda.

It is located off Labrador, from which it crosses the Strait of the Fair Isles, between longitude 46° and 51° 46`N and longitude 54°51` and 62°E. Its surface, covering 85,000 square kilometers, is quite irregular, jaggedly formed by numerous protruding islands, a large number of bays, small ports, inlets and bays, between which ships can anchor comfortably because the water is deep everywhere.

Notevolissime per la loro estensione e sicurezza sono le baie di Placentia, di Fortuna e di Santa Maria al sud, di Nostra Donna e Bianca a settentrione; di Concezione, Trinità e Buonavista a oriente; di San Giovanni, delle Isole di San Giorgio all'occidente, tutte popolate da pescatori, i quali sono oltre 100.000.

The Bay of Placentia, Fortuna and Santa Maria to the south, and Nostra Donna and Bianca to the north are well known for their size and safety. From concezione, Trinità and Buonavista to the east. From San Giovanni, from the islands of San Giorgio to the west. They are all inhabited by more than 100,000 fishermen.

L’interno di Terranova è per lo più piano: verso l’occidente, però, l’isola presenta parecchie catene di colline. Ha numerosi laghi, parecchi fiumi, ma di poca importanza, grandi selve, ricche di selvaggina, di caribù e di volpi, e parecchie città. La capitale dell’isola è San Giovanni, situata in una baia posta al sud-est, con un porto di difficile accesso, essendo l’imboccatura assai stretta.

The interior of Newfoundland is mostly flat. Towards the north, however, the island has several ranges of hills. It has many lakes, many but small rivers, large forests rich in deer, elk and wolves and a few towns. The capital is St. John's, which is located on a south-eastern bay, in a port that is difficult to access due to the narrow entrance.

Vengono poi Harbour-Grace, situata sulla costa occidentale della baia Concezione, poi Carbonier, Porto Trinità e Placentia.
Quest’isola fu una delle prime scoperte, anzi taluni affermano che lo sia stata ancor prima che il grande Colombo toccasse le isole del Golfo del Messico.

Mention should then be made of Harbour-Grace, on the west coast of the Bay of Concezione, and Carbonier, Porto Trinità and Placentia.
This island was one of the first discoveries, some claim it was even before the great Columbus set foot on the island of the Gulf of Mexico.

I più, però, e con ragione, ritengono che Giovanni Caboto, che intraprese quell’audace spedizione per conto dell’Inghilterra, l’abbia scoperta nel l497, cioè cinque anni più tardi dell’approdo di Colombo alle Antille. Malgrado la sua scoperta risalga a un’epoca così avanzata, Terranova rimase quasi abbandonata e la sua colonizzazione non iniziò che nel 1623 con lord Baltimore.

However, most believe, correctly, that Giovanni Caboto, who led that daring expedition for England, discovered it in 1497, five years after Columbus landed in the West Indies. Despite its early discovery, Newfoundland remained long abandoned and colonization did not begin until 1623 with Lord Baltimore.

L’aerostato spinto da un freddo vento di sud-ovest, filava sopra quella lunga e sottile penisola che racchiude, verso occidente, la baia Placentia, dirigendo verso quella di Trinità. Da quell’altezza l’isola era interamente visibile in tutti i suoi punti, anche i più lontani.

The airship, driven by a cold south-easterly wind, hovered over this long and narrow island, which is closed off on the west by the Bay of Placentia, towards Trinidad. From this height the island was perfectly visible, in all its, even the most distant.

. Era come un’immensa carta geografica, spiegata sotto gli occhi degli arditi aeronauti. Grandi boschi di larici, di betulle, di pini e frassini apparivano qua e là, come pure parecchi villaggi, situati lungo le spiagge della baia. Si vedevano i pescatori scendere precipitosamente a terra e gli abitanti uscire in fretta dalle capanne ad ammirare il vascello aereo, che filava maestosamente sopra le loro teste e si udivano di quando in quando dei clamori e anche qualche detonazione.

It was like a vast geographic map, laid out under the bold eyes of the pioneers of the air. Big forests also larch, birch, pine appeared, here and there, as well as some villages on the coast of the bay, here and there. You could see the fishermen hurrying ashore and the residents hurrying out of their huts, and you could hear screams and explosions from time to time.

“Diavolo!” esclamò l’irlandese, che non amava il silenzio. “Ci prendono per aquile? Fortunatamente siamo molto alti e le loro palle non arriveranno fino a noi.”
“Crederanno di salutarci,” rispose Kelly.
“Che siano indiani?”

"Hell!" cried the Irishman, who didn't like the silence. "Do they take us for eagles? Luckily we fly at high altitude, so their bullets will never reach us."
"They think they're greeting us," Kelly replied.
"Are they Indians?"
"The Indians of Newfoundland have been extinct for a long time."
"They were wiped out?"
"White civilization has a devastating effect on non-white peoples. Wherever it appears, it destroys."
"Did any native people live there at the time of discovery?"

“Sì, e non poche, a quanto sembra, ma scomparvero presto. L’ultima fu quella dei Micmac.”
“Erano proprio dei barbari?”
“No, anzi si scoprirono in loro notevoli principi di civiltà, che dimostravano che, in tempi antichi, avevano avuto contatti con gli uomini bianchi.”
“In tempi anteriori alla scoperta dell’isola?” chiese O’Donnell con sorpresa.
“Sì, amico mio.”

"Yes, and not a few, it seems. They soon disappeared, however. The last ones were Micmac."
"So they were barbarians?"
"No. They were even found to have significant civilizational achievements that prove they had contact with white people in earlier times."
"In times before the island was discovered?" O'Donnell asked in surprise.
"Yes my friend."

“Ma l’isola fu scoperta solo nel 1497! Chi poteva averla visitata prima di Caboto?”
“Voi mettete in campo un'autentica questione, che ha fatto versare torrenti d’inchiostro agli storici europei.”
“E quale mai?”
“Che l’America settentrionale sia stata visitata dagli europei cinque secoli prima delle scoperte di Colombo e di Caboto.”
“Ma da chi?”
“Dagli scoto-irlandesi e dai norvegesi.”
“Questa è bella!”

"But the island wasn't discovered until 1497! Who could have discovered it before Caboto?"
"You raise an important question that has already caused streams of ink to flow from European historians."
"Which one?"
"Whether North America hadn't been discovered five centuries before Columbus and Caboto."
"But by whom?"
"Of the Scots - Irish and the Norwegians."
"That is beautiful!"

“Sembra che prima del 1000 parecchi audaci marinai scoto-irlandesi, spinti o dall’istinto dell’emigrazione o dal desiderio di conquista, siano sbarcati su queste isole e sulle coste del Canada, fondando degli insediamenti e introducendo fra le tribù primitive la religione cristiana. Infatti, si sa che quando i norvegesi, dopo aver scoperto l’Islanda e la Groenlandia, sbarcarono su queste coste, trovarono tracce evidenti del cristianesimo.”

"It seems that before the year 1000 many bold seafarers of Scottish-Irish origin, impelled both by a desire to emigrate and to conquer, landed on these islands and on the coast of Canada, established settlements, and among the primitive population spread the Christian faith. In fact, it is known that the Norwegians, after discovering Ireland and Greenland and landing on those shores, found obvious traces of the Christian faith."

“Ma che sia proprio vero che i norvegesi siano sbarcati in queste regioni?”
“Le tradizioni leggendarie che la Saga nordica ha trasmesso fino a noi, accennano alle spedizioni dei norvegesi e degli scoto-irlandesi, e ormai si è certi che qui fondarono parecchi insediamenti, specialmente nella Nuova Scozia e nel Nuovo Brunswick.”
“Ma che cosa accadde delle loro colonie? Perché non si spinsero verso il sud, alla conquista delle regioni più miti e più ricche?”

"But is it really true that the Norwegians got as far as these areas?"
"The Norse folktales that have come down to us mention expeditions by the Norwegian and Scots-Irish tribes and are now certain to have established many settlements, particularly in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick."
"But wow s happened to your colonies? Why didn't they push further south, conquering milder and richer regions?"

“Ecco quello che si ignora. Di quelle colonie non rimasero che le tracce, sono state distrutte dai selvaggi o qualche terribile malattia ha spento quei primi coloni? Ciò però non toglie alcun merito alle grandi scoperte di Colombo e di Caboto, perché furono loro a far conoscere all’Europa un altro immenso continente, la cui esistenza era stata messa in dubbio e...”
“Che cosa?”

Entrambi tesero le orecchie e udirono in aria dei leggeri crepitii. Pareva che dei corpuscoli urtassero la superficie degli aerostati. Kelly guardò in alto e vide brillare, ai raggi leggermente tiepidi del sole, delle pagliuzze di ghiaccio che si tenevano sospese in aria.

"Doesn't it seem like the cold has suddenly increased, O'Donnell?"
"So much so that my teeth are chattering, Engineer"
"Listen!"
Both pricked up their ears and heard a faint rustling in the air. It seemed as if small grains hit the surface of the airship. Kelly looked up and saw, in the pale rays of the sun, blades of ice floating in the air.

“Comprendo da cosa deriva questo brusco abbassamento della temperatura,” disse, “attraversiamo uno strato di sottili ghiaccioli. Brutto segno: porterà una nevicata.”
“Tò!” esclamò O’Donnell. “Non vi sembra che ci stiamo abbassando?”
“Infatti è vero. Questo freddo repentino tende a restringere l’idrogeno, ma appena saremo usciti da questo strato, il sole tornerà a dilatarlo e noi a salire.”

"I understand where this sudden temperature drop is coming from," he said. "We're flying through a layer with small ice crystals. A bad sign: A snowstorm will follow."
"Damn it!" O'Donnell exclaimed. "Don't you think we're sinking?"
"Yes, that's right. This cold will cause the hydrogen to contract. But when we get out of that layer, the sun will expand it again and we will rise again."

Il vascello aereo si abbassava lentamente, ma doveva essere cosa di breve durata. Ben presto il barometro avvertì gli aeronauti che i trovavano a 3000 metri di altezza, mentre prima si erano sempre tenuti a 3500. Quell’abbassamento permise di osservare meglio la grande isola che si stendeva sotto di loro.

The airship slowly sank, but it didn't last long. Soon the barometer informed them that they were at 10,000 feet, whereas previously they were at 12,000 feet. This loss of altitude gave them a better view of the large island stretched out below them.

Si distinguevano perfettamente le abitazioni sparse sul bordo delle grandi boscaglie, gli abitanti che cercavano di correre dietro all’aerostato, credendolo forse un gigantesco uccello di nuovo genere, data la sua forma così differente dai soliti palloni, e si udivano nettamente le loro grida di stupore.

One could clearly see the housing estates scattered along the edges of the forests. The inhabitants, who tried to run after the flying ship, probably mistook it for a large bird because of its shape, which differed so much from other balloons. You could hear the screams that erupted in surprise.

Alle tre pomeridiane O’Donnell e l’ingegnere scorsero, come annidata sulle sponde di una baia, San Giovanni, la capitale dell’isola. Per alcuni istanti poterono vedere il palazzo dell’assemblea, la dogana, le fortificazioni e le numerose graves che si estendevano per lungo tratto fuori dalla città, poi non videro più che una massa biancastra poiché il vento li spingeva verso nord, ossia in direzione delle baie di Trinità e Bonavista.

At three o'clock in the afternoon, O'Donnell and the engineer saw San John's, the island's capital, appearing to have perched on the shores of the bay. For a few moments they saw the Palace of the National Assembly, the Customs House, the Fortress and the numerous graves that stretched long distances outside of the city. Then she saw only a whitish mass because the wind pushed her to the north, towards the Bay of Trinità and Bonavista.

Alle tre e quaranta minuti si libravano sopra il capo Fuels, avvistando l’isola del Fuoco, e pochi minuti più tardi l’aerostato abbandonava l’isola, filando sopra l’oceano Atlantico, le cui onde si urtavano con profondi muggiti, coprendosi d’un immenso manto di candida spuma.”

At three forty minutes they were hovering over Cape Fuels, towards Fire Island. A few minutes later the airship left the island and hovered over the Atlantic, whose waves broke with a loud roar and were covered with a huge mantle of foam.

“Addio terra!” esclamò O’Donnell. “D’ora innanzi non vedremo che acqua.”
“Purché il vento non cambi direzione,” disse l’ingegnere. “Potrebbe spingerci verso il nord e fors’anche ricondurci verso l'America.”
“Dove ci porta ora?”
“Diritti al grande banco. Non vedete laggiù, verso l’est, quei punti neri? Sono le navi occupate nella pesca ai merluzzi.”

"Ahoy Earth!" O'Donnell shouted. "From now on we will see nothing but water."
"Provided the wind doesn't change direction," said the engineer, "it could take us north and maybe bring us back to America."
"Where is he taking us now?"
"Straight to the big bank. Don't you see, to the east, those big black dots? Those are the ships dedicated to catching cod."

“E lontano però il grande banco”
“Vi giungeremo fra un paio d ore, se la nostra velocità, che è ora di quaranta miglia, non diminuisce.”
“Si pescano dappertutto i merluzzi, intorno all’isola?”
“Sì, specialmente quando i pesci cominciano a lasciare il banco per cercare un altro cibo. In primavera i merluzzi si radunano in grandi masse nei dogger-banks delle coste di Islanda, nei fiorden della Norvegia e nei golfi dell’Irlanda, poi si dirigono tutti insieme verso Terranova.

"We shall reach you in a few hours if our speed, which is now forty miles an hour, does not decrease."
"Do you fish cod all around the island?"
"Yes, especially when the fish leave the bank to look for other food. In the spring cod gather in large numbers at the Dogger Banks on the coast of Iceland, in the fjords of Norway and in the Gulf of Ireland. Then do it they all set out together for Terranova.

È in questa stagione che dalle coste della Norvegia, della Francia, dell’Inghilterra e dell’Olanda partono vere flottiglie di pescatori, i quali, cosa sorprendente davvero, qui vengono senza bisogno di carte e di strumenti necessari a fare il punto, seguendo, direi quasi, una traccia secolare. Si calcolano fino a seimila navi che tutti gli anni vengono impiegate nella pesca del prezioso pesce.”

At this time of the year real fleets of fishermen set out from the coasts of Norway, France, England and Holland, who, amazingly enough, find their way without charts and without the instruments with which to navigate position can be found. They are following, I would almost say, a centuries-old trail. The number of those involved in catching the precious fish who come here every year is estimated at six thousand."

"They must be fishing an enormous amount."
"Between 35 and 40 million."
"And who first noticed that the cod was gathering at this big bank?"
"Caboto noticed this. Then another bold Italian navigator, the Florentine Giovanni da Verrazano, who conquered Newfoundland in 1525 on behalf of King Francesco I of France and was shortly afterwards struck down by the spears and axes of the indigenous population. Then Cartier, the discoverer of the Sankt Lorentz river."

“Si pescano anche nel San Lorenzo?”
“No, i merluzzi non penetrano mai nei fiumi, anzi si tengono lontani dalle foci.”
“Terminata la stagione sul grande banco, si radunano altrove?”
“No, si disperdono, scompaiono e non si vedono più per il resto dell’anno. Si ignora dove vadano a svernare durante la stagione fredda, ma pare che si tengano in acque assai profonde.

"Is there also fishing on the Sankt Lorentz river?"
"No. The cod never enter the rivers, they even stay away from the estuaries."
"When the time on the big bench is up, do they gather somewhere else?"
"No. They disperse, vers375 / 5.000
dwindle and you don't see them all year round. It is not known where they go to hibernate during the cold season, but it seems that they reside in fairly deep waters.
