A surprise for the police of Canada

"Hooray!" cried tens of thousands of voices.
"Long live the Washington!"
"Hooray for Mister Kelly!"
"A thousand dollars for the believer!" a voice yelled.

These talks, these screams, these bets, some more unusual than the others, criss-crossed in all directions, were made everywhere. Not so many people had been seen congregating on the island of Brettone since the time they were discovered. For three days steamships, sailboats, cutters, dinghies have been spilling out of the American shores of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont in Massachusetts, Delaware, Maryland, Connectivity and New York State. French and English from Upper and Lower Canada and from the island of Terranova.

The small town of Sydney, capital of the island of Brettone, was inundated with the first arrivals. The others camped, although the season was anything but mild, under improvised tents with all sorts of roofs: sails, reed mats. All were determined not to give until they saw what had brought them to these inhospitable beaches.

A man, some called him bold, others said he was mad and tired of life and the squandering of millions, had announced that he was about to attempt the crossing of the Atlantic in a balloon! It didn't take more for Americans and Englishmen, some lovers of extraordinary spectacles, others admirers of scientific achievements.

Il nome dell’aeronauta che stava per tentare quella temeraria impresa, era noto negli Stati Settentrionali dell’Unione e nel Basso come nell’Alto Canada.
Ned Kelly, tale era il suo nome, era uno yankee puro sangue, nato a New Port, nel Connecticut. Ricco a milioni, solo al mondo, ardito, amante delle scienze, ingegnere di fama, da parecchi anni si era dato allo studio dell’aeronautica. The name of the pioneer of the air who was about to start this daring enterprise was well known in the northern United States and in upper and lower Canada.
Ned Kelly, that was his name, was a quintessential Yankee, born in New Port, Connecticut. Worth several million, alone in the world, lover of science, engineer of rank, he devoted several years to the study of aeronautics. It was said that he was looking for a way to control the balloons. Because of this, he had made many flights leading to devices he had built, but, it seemed, without success.

Aveva quindi abbandonato quegli attrezzi, più di peso che di utilità, e si diceva che si fosse dato allo studio delle correnti aeree, volendo tentare un grande viaggio.

He then stopped using these devices, which weighed heavily but were of no use. It is said that he then began to study the wind currents because he was planning a long journey. He was known to have ascended in a tethered balloon for a few months in Nova Scotia and on the island of Cape Breton Island. Then, surprisingly, he went to New York for a few weeks.

In early April 1878, The Telegraph reported that Ned Kelly was attempting to cross the Atlantic in a balloon of a new design. This news made a deep impression on both Americans and Canadians.

Pazzia, o suicidio, o buona riuscita, le persone meglio munite di denaro s’imbarcarono in massa chi sui piroscafi, chi sui velieri, chi sulle lance, e si portarono all’Isola Brettone.

Scientists from both countries hastened to call this daring venture a suicide. The newspapers split into two parties. Those who were sympathetic to the engineer, those who were against him. For the audience, this attempt, with a few exceptions, was madness. Madness or suicide, or crowned by success, those who could afford it went en masse, on steamers, on sailboats, in dinghies, to Cape Breton Island.

Everyone wanted to witness the expedition's departure, though hl most were firmly convinced that this new balloon would explode as soon as it took off and they would witness the death throes of the aviation pioneer and his comrades, if he had found any. For they had no doubt that they would drown in the ocean.

The two heaps of silk had expanded under the pressure of the hydrogen pouring in from the hoses, and the shape it took made everyone squeal in amazement. They didn't look like ordinary balloons resembling demijohns turned upside down. They are two immense spindles, almost forty meters long, with a diameter, at the center, of fifteen meters, which slowly rose with a slight undulation, thus slowly stretching the ropes that the thirty or so helpers held in their strong hands.

Only a few minutes remained before this huge machine would begin its flight over the roaring waves of the Atlantic.
The excitement of the audience reached its peak. Everyone forgot the bets and stared spellbound at the two balloons, which kept inflating while the helpers performed mysterious maneuvers with the pumps.

When the daring aviation pioneer emerged from the building complex where the gas was being produced, the excitement reached unimaginable proportions.

He is a handsome man of about 35 years of age, tall, agile, with a wide forehead, black, shining eyes and energetic features. Like the dark-skinned young man of about eighteen or twenty who followed him, he wore a plain white wool suit. A tremendous "hooray" sounded. The spectators waved their caps, hats and scarves like they had gone mad.

The engineer, having reached the middle of the fenced area, unfurled the Stars and Stripes of the United States on the stern of the silver boat that will serve as his gondola, provoking an enthusiastic Viva from his compatriots. Then, with a brief glance, he examined his magnificent airship and, after urging silence with a vigorous gesture, addressed the audience:

An icy silence received the air pioneer's words. The enthusiasm was suddenly gone. Viewers looked each other in the face, but no one said "yes." To applaud this bold, that was all right. But to accompany him, to follow him across the ocean on this capricious machine, at the mercy of the winds, and then perhaps perish in the waves, that was something else!

The audience erupted in peals of laughter.
