About the Bank of Newfoundland

The Great Bank of Newfoundland, made famous by cod fishing, is located between 40°,47' and 50°,17' north longitude and 46° and 50° west longitude.

Everyone already knows what a cod is, but only dried and decapitated.
It is endowed with an impressive voracity, similar to that of freshwater pike, and feeds on crustaceans and fish.
It has three fins on its back, two anal fins and a square-shaped ventral fin.

Il suo muso è grosso, ottuso, munito sotto la sinfisi di un barbiglio carnoso di forma conica; i suoi occhi sono grandi, il corpo svelto, coperto di piccole scaglie aderenti; il suo colore è verdognolo e giallastro sopra, argenteo sotto.

Its mouth is large, blunt, equipped under the chin with a fleshy barb in the shape of a cone. Its eyes are large, its body draped, covered with close-fitting scales. It is greenish in color, yellowish above and silvery below.

Le lenze che vengono adoperate nella pesca sono funicelle solidissime, del diametro di metri 0,027, della lunghezza di 100 metri, o di 150 e anche l60, munite di cordicelle più sottili, terminanti in ami di ferro dolce o d’acciaio, i quali portano o pezzi di aringa, o di cappellano o di cornuto.

Fin dove arrivava lo sguardo, bricks, brigantini, golette, orche, cutters rotolavano furiosamente sotto le larghe onde dell'Atlantico e dappertutto si vedevano miriadi di dorès, quei piccoli battelli incaricati del ritiro delle lenze e delle prede, montati ognuno da due uomini vestiti di abiti di tela incatramata o cerata e di un lungo grembiule che sale fino al loro collo.

When the airship reached the bank on the south-easterly wind, the fishermen were fully engaged in their work.
As far as the eye could see, bricks, two-masters, sailing ships, cutters rocked violently on the long Atlantic waves and everywhere you could see the Dorès, those small boats whose task it was to bring in the rods with the catch. They were manned by two men, dressed in clothing smeared with tar or wax, and a long apron reaching up to their necks.

Everywhere, in the midst of a deafening noise that rose even to the pioneers of the air, there was hectic activity.

Sui ponti dei vari battelli il lavoro ferveva con non minore attività.
I capitani, i padroni, i mastri, ritti dinanzi a delle tavole, tagliavano le teste ai merluzzi portati a bordo dei legni dai pescatori dei piccoli canotti e raccoglievano i fegati e le uova, che deponevano entro grandi canestri, mentre i loro aiutanti, gli habilleurs, strappavano la spina dorsale e pulivano l'interno, gettando poi tutti quei pesci nella stiva, dove altri uomini erano incaricati di sottoporli al primo sale.

The hustle and bustle on the bridges of the other fishing boats was no less busy.
The captains, the owners, the masters, sat upright behind tables, cut off the heads of the cod brought on board from the fishermen's small boats, and collected the liver and eggs, which they collected in large canisters, while their helpers , the habilleurs, tore out the spine and cleaned the inside. Oggi invece viene usato come ricostituente, e tutti ormai conoscono la sua efficacia straordinaria. Quello che si estrae dai merluzzi che si pesano sul banco di Terranova viene considerato il migliore, perché è più ricco di sostanze grasse e quindi più efficace come ricostituente.

Today, however, it is mostly used as a tonic and today everyone knows of its unusual effectiveness. That which is obtained from the cod fished on the Newfoundland Banks is considered the best because it contains more fat and is therefore better as a tonic.

Dal grande banco s’innalzava fino all’aerostato un puzzo nauseante di pesce, d’olio, un fumo nero e pesante, eruttato dalle numerose navi da guerra di tutte le nazioni, scaglionate fra quegli innumerevoli battelli da pesca, ed al nord, al sud, all’est e all’ovest si udiva un frastuono impossibile a descriversi: fischi di macchine, spari di petrieri che richiamavano a bordo i canotti, tocchi di campane, suoni di trombette, un grido, un chiamarsi continuo, un vociare in tutte le lingue.

From the big bank to the airship rose a stench of fish, oil and a black smoke coming from the warships of all nations that were among the countless fishing vessels and in the north, in the south, in the east an indescribable noise was heard . The whistle of the engines, the salvo of cannons calling the small boats to come aboard, the ringing of bells, blasts of trumpets, a yell, a constant shouting, a babble of voices in every language.

All'apparire dell’aerostato, il quale filava maestosamente sopra il banco, subentrò un profondo silenzio. Tutti quei pescatori dimenticarono per alcuni istanti le lenze ed i merluzzi, guardando quel meraviglioso vascello che il vento spingeva sopra i muggenti flutti dell’oceano.

There was a deep silence as the airship, which hovered majestically over the bank, appeared. All the fishermen forgot the rods and the cod for a moment, contemplated this wondrous ship that the wind drove across the roaring waves of the Atlantic.

Tutti quegli uomini parevano stupiti da quella improvvisa apparizione. Avevano indovinato di che cosa si trattasse, o la scambiavano, come gli abitanti di Terranova, per un immenso uccello di nuova specie?

Everyone was surprised by this sudden appearance. Did they guess what it was, or, like the Newfoundlanders, did they think it was a giant bird of a new species?

A quel silenzio successe ben presto un clamore assordante: hurrah immensi echeggiarono da un capo all’altro del grande banco, si agitavano i berretti, si ammainavano le bandiere tre volte in segno di saluto, si suonavano furiosamente le campane e le trombette, e si sparavano i petrieri, come quando le pesanti nebbie piombano repentinamente sulle flottiglie.

The silence was soon followed by a mighty noise: thunderous hurrahs echoed from one side of the bench to the other, caps were shaken, flags waved three times in salute, bells and trumpets were blared violently, volleys were fired, as is customary also did when the heavy tide suddenly fell over the fleets.

I legni da guerra, i cui equipaggi avevano subito compreso di cosa si trattasse e che forse avevano avuto sentore dell’ardita spedizione del Mister Kelly, scaricavano i loro pezzi, mentre i marinai, arrampicatisi sui pennoni, salutavano gli intrepidi aeronauti con formidabili hurrah.

The warships, whose crews understood at once what was at stake, and might have heard of Mister Kelly's daring enterprise, fired their volleys, while the sailors, clutching banners, the bold pioneers of the air with a loud clang Hurrah greeted.

"Thank you!" yelled the engineer, deeply moved as he waved the Union flag and O'Donnell fired the two carbines.
But her appearance was short-lived, as the wind drove the ship across the Atlantic at a speed of sixty miles an hour. In a few minutes it had cleared the long lines of ships and boats and was moving away in a north-easterly direction.

“E io vi dico che non sono meno commosso di voi, O’Donnell” rispose l’ingegnere.
“Che questi pescatori conoscessero già il vostro progetto?”

"Sapperlott!" shouted the Irishman. "I confess to you, Mister Kelly, that this unusual reception confused me."
"And I tell you, I'm no less touched than you, O'Donnell," the engineer replied.
"Have these fishermen heard about your project?"

“È probabile, perché negli Stati Uniti e nel Canada ne hanno parlato a lungo, e quelli di Terranova ne saranno stati informati.”
“Comunque sia, quella dimostrazione d’affetto è stata commovente, ingegnere. Non mi ha permesso di seguire attentamente la pesca dei merluzzi.”
“Ne sapete già abbastanza, su quella pesca.”
“Sì, grazie alla Vostra erudizione. Quale direzione teniamo?”

"It's possible because it's been talked about a lot in the United States and Canada, and those in Newfoundland will probably have been briefed on it."

“Credo che abbiate ragione” rispose l’irlandese, sorridendo.

"Still heading north-east, so in my current."
"And shall we now encounter no more land?"
"Not a single one to the shores of Europe."
"Hell! That has a certain effect, Mister Kelly."
"You will wash it down with four bites and a bottle of old Spanish wine."
"I think you are right," replied the Irishman.

“Un buon bicchiere di vino scaccia meglio di qualunque altra cosa le emozioni, anzi, vi confesso che questo freddo mi ha messo indosso un certo appetito.”
“Sono sette ore che non abbiamo messo sotto i denti una briciola di biscotto. ”
“È fiato sprecato, Mister Kelly.
L’irlandese aveva ragione.
Quell’altezza produceva su di lui un senso di invincibile paura; quel vuoto lo atterriva e gli faceva girare la testa.

"A good glass of wine banishes the feelings better than anything else, although I must confess that this cold has made me hungry."
"It's seven o'clock and we didn't have a crumb of a rusk under our teeth. Hey, Simone, make us something to eat."
"That's wasted effort, Mister Kelly."
The Irishman was right.
"This height caused him an indomitable fear. This emptiness terrified him and his head dizzy."

In un batter d'occhio aprì una cassa, ne tolse una scatola di carne arrostita, un’altra di acciughe, dei biscotti, una bottiglia, bicchieri e posate, e preparò la tavola, che era sostituita da una panchina del battello.

"Stay there," said O'Donnel. "I'll take care of the service on board lazybones."
As quick as one blinks, he opened a box, took out a box of roast meat, another of anchovies, rusks, a bottle, glasses and cutlery, and prepared the table, which had been replaced with a ship's bench.
"If you like, Mister Kelly," he said in his most beautiful voice.

L’ingegnere, che stava esaminando i suoi strumenti, si affrettò a rispondere all’appello, ed i due aeronauti, che cominciavano a provare i morsi della fame intaccarono con molto appetito le vivande.
Terminata la cena, l’ingegnere e l’irlandese accesero le sigarette, poi volsero uno sguardo verso l’ovest.
Il grande banco era scomparso sotto l’orizzonte, e l’aerostato filava sull’immensa distesa dell’Atlantico, i cui muggiti salivano fino alla navicella.

The engineer, about to examine his instruments, hastened to answer the summons, and the two pioneers of the air, beginning to feel the pangs of hunger, ate the meat with great appetite. After dinner, the engineer and the Irishman lit a cigarette and then looked west. L’irlandese, malgrado la sua audacia, impallidì leggermente. Ormai non dovevano contare più sulle loro forze e sul loro vascello aereo, poiché la sola immensità li circondava e in caso di catastrofe nessun uomo sarebbe accorso in loro aiuto.
Quasi contemporaneamente il sole tramontò e le tenebre piombarono bruscamente sull’oceano avvolgendo l’aerostato.

The Irishman, despite his boldness, paled slightly.
