Capitolo 25

L’inseguimento

chapter 25

Tracking

The hunt for the Washington began. The English, outraged that they were slipping the loot they thought they already had in their hands, let their ship run at full steam.

Knowing that they would not be able to land on these coasts, which belonged to the Sultant Bar and thus to the French protectorate, they prepared to roar the cannons in order to drop the flying ship into the water before the touched earth.

Fortunately for the balloonists, the Washington had found a fast current at this altitude, propelling her at twenty miles an hour, bringing her closer to shore, which was only twelve or fifteen miles distant.

This current was their salvation, for by propelling them with one higher than that of the ship, they were able to get out of range of the cannon fire.

The English had brought a mortar on deck because they could not set the necessary angle of inclination with the ship's guns to fire their projectiles. But before this could be loaded, the airship had gained such a distance that they lost all hope of being able to use this part successfully.

They started firing the cannon, which had to have a long range, but the bullets didn't reach those heights because this part didn't have the required elevation angle. They all fell near the flying ship, but without reaching it. They set about chasing him, shoveling tons of coal into the furnaces to reach maximum speed.

“Ci vogliono morti” disse l’ingegnere a O’Donnell.
“Rimarremo in aria tanto?”
If they couldn't compete with it, they didn't want to lose sight of it. "They want us dead," the engineer said to O'Donnell. "These villains are not giving up in pursuit, but I hope to escape their cannon blasts."
"Are we still going south-east?"
"Still. In a few hours I hope to be floating between the islands of Bissagos and the coast."
"Are we going to stay in the air that long?"

"I hope so. If not, I am determined to lower the gondola and reach shore by boat. We have now completed the Atlantic crossing and the people of Bathrust and these ships that are pursuing us can attest to that."

Meanwhile, the Washington's lead on her pursuers, who were lagging behind even as her engine worked angrily, widened.

The wind, steadying at between eighteen and twenty miles, drove it parallel to the shore, but approaching it.
The balloonists could use the telescopes to watch the inhabitants of the villages, who belonged to the strong and enterprising race of the Malinken, as they ran along the coast to gaze after the balloon for as long as they could.
At six the balloon began to descend. The hydrogen was escaping rapidly through the sutures the boy had made, which might have opened again under the internal pressure.

Fortunately, the balloonists had a lead of eight kilometers over the Kreutzer and the balls could not reach them. But since they were still far from the coast, they dropped the last objects they had: part of the ammunition, the barometers, the thermometers, the last food and finally their last supply of water.

They kept only the land anchor, which was necessary for the descent, a rope and their weapons, which they only wanted to part with at the last moment. The Washington rose again and regained the 600 meters she had previously lost.
"If we can't land on the coast, then on one of these islands," said the engineer.

"Won't the English catch us?"
"If we fall, they won't see us and won't know where we are."
"Will we be received by these dark-skinned people?"
"I don't know, O'Donnell. The Bissagos Islands are little known."
"If they give us a bad reception, we will sell our skin dearly!"

"We're sinking again!" said the boy.
"Poor Washington, she's collapsing fast."
"I'm afraid the seams have opened up again," said the engineer. "I smell gas."
"Can you still see the ship?"
"Yes. Down there, smoking like a volcano. But it can't keep up with us, even though the wind is very weak."

L’aerostato intanto continuava a scendere.
Meanwhile, the airship continued to descend. It suddenly fell two or three hundred at a time, as if its strength had suddenly diminished. Then it stopped, circled on itself, and then continued to fall away. There was nothing left to discard now. Soon the roar of the waves reached the ears of the balloonists. The ocean was only 600 meters away, but Bissagos Island was only a few meters away many kilometers.

"Let's prepare to leave the Washington," said the engineer in a moved voice.
"So we're not going to save you?" O'Donnell asked sadly. "I love that brave balloon that took us across the Atlantic."

"That's impossible O'Donnell. The waves are pretty violent on this coast, they would shake our gondola with such thumps that they would sink it if we didn't free it from the balloons."
"So she's going to go up alone?"
"Yes, O'Donnell."
"And where will she come down?"
"Who can tell? Probably quite a long way from here, in the interior of the Sierra Leone coast or further away."

"The dark-skinned will think it's the moon."
"It is possible, O'Donnell, and who knows how many precious talismans and fetishes they will make with the silk."
"The Washington suddenly descended with extreme speed. It seemed like everything had suddenly become very heavy.
"That's what I feared," said the engineer. "Get ready to cut the ropes!"

A quattrocento metri cadde dritto, rapidità vertiginosa.
"We're ready," O'Donnell and the boy replied.
"Hang your guns across your chest and your ammo in your pockets. You never know what's going to happen."
The Washington continued to sink, however, supported by the wind, it did not describe a vertical line, but a curved one. Then, at four hundred meters, she fell straight, with dizzying speed.
"Hold on tight to the ropes," the engineer just managed to say.

The gondola was only a few meters from the ocean, whose breakers roared ominously, as if eager to swallow the vast prey that came down from the high regions of the atmosphere. Suddenly the balloonists found themselves between the waves. The gondola that had been dropped in such a hurry had sunk, and the mighty waves had covered and overturned it.
"Cut the ropes!" the engineer shouted.
"We're sinking!" O'Donnell yelled. "The gondola is lost."

“Tagliate ed aggrappatevi alla rete. Forse risaliremo.
"Cut and then cling to the net. Maybe we'll climb again. O'Donnell and the boy, not losing their nerve, cut the ropes with a few slashes. The gondola, full of water as it was, sank, but the balloonists had had time to cling to the handrail.

“Ricadremo in mare?”
The Washington, relieved of this last weight, once more had the strength to rise to 500 meters, dragging with her the engineer and his companions, who sat on the beam, clutching the ropes with the strength of desperation.
"It's over!" said the engineer.
"Will we fall back into the sea?"

"I'm afraid so, but the islands are only a few steps away from us."
In fact, the islands of Bissagos spread out before them. The furthest advanced was only a mile away and the wind was blowing the balloons towards it. They watched the beach carefully, but saw no residents. However, when they looked to the west, they saw a small ship sailing four miles off the coast of the island.
"Another warship?" O'Donnell asked.

“Sì, O’Donnell, vengono in nostro aiuto.”
“Giungeranno in tempo?”
"No. This is a small sailing ship, a merchant ship," said the engineer. "Look! The crew turns and sets the bow towards the northern shores of the island."
"Have you seen us?"
"Yes O'Donnell, they come to our aid."
"Will they come in time?"
A few explosions were heard far away. It was the small ship's crew that informed the astronauts that it had seen them. O'Donnell fired a shot with the large carbine he had salvaged from the wreck while the engineer loaded his revolver.

“Tanto meglio. E quel piccolo legno cosa sarà?”
"They're coming," Kelly said, "but by the time they get here, we'll be dead."
"See that warship?" O'Donnell asked.
"No," replied the engineer, standing taller than the others as he held on to the mesh of the net.
"Not even the smoke?"
"It seems to me that I can see a thin column of smoke down there.
"All the better. And the little ship, what is that?"

“Procura di tenerti sempre vicino a me” disse O’Donnell.
"Without a doubt one of those ships that sails between the coasts on behalf of the factories."
"Let's hope it's not English."
"Maybe it's a French or Portuguese ship.
"We fall," said Walter.
"Aren't you scared, poor boy?" asked the engineer.
"No, sir," the boy replied firmly.
"Try to stay close to me," O'Donnell said.
"I can swim, sir, and the waves don't scare me."
"Brave boy!"

“Bravo ragazzo!”
"Attention!" shouted the engineer.
The balloon fell into the sea a thousand meters from the beach of the first island. He held on for a moment and then fell like a cannonball into the waves. But no sooner had the men dived in than he abruptly climbed back up, causing the ropes to tighten. "Hold on!" the engineer yelled. "He drags us to the beach."

The sea was turbulent, the long Atlantic waves breaking on the islands and islets and on the African coast, creating these violent eddies. The mighty waves slammed furiously at the balloonists, almost eager to snatch them away, covering them with foam, hitting them in every way imaginable and stunning them with their sustained roar.

The two great cones, feeling the blows received by the three men, descended, then rose again, revolving around themselves, tilting now one side, now the other. However, the wind, caught in their folds, drove them towards the island.
Suddenly, among the roar of the waves, there was a scream. Almost simultaneously, O'Donnell and the engineer felt how they were suddenly lifted out of the water and yanked into the air.

“Gran Dio!” esclamò O’Donnell, aggrappandosi prontamente alla rete. “Che cos’è accaduto?”
“Walter!
"Good God!" O'Donnell yelled, clinging to the web with presence of mind. "What happened?" "Walter! Walter!" yelled the engineer as the balloon, relieved of its weight, continued to climb.
The boy, torn by the waves from the beam he was clinging to, reappeared between the waves and swam with vigorous strokes, pointing his finger at the beach 200 meters away.

Il Washington, malgrado fosse quasi mezzo vuoto e inzuppato d’acqua, fu trascinato sopra i grandi boschi che coprivano l’isola.
“Si salverà quel povero ragazzo?”
“Nuotava vigorosamente” risposero l’ingegnere. “Toccherà la spiaggia senza fatica.”
“Lo ritroveremo?”
“Lo cercheremo, O’Donnell. Cadiamo ancora.”
“Sui boschi?”
The Washington, though half empty and waterlogged, was being pulled toward the great forests that covered the island.
"Will the poor boy save himself?"
"He's swimming with strong strokes, he'll reach the beach with no trouble."
"Will we find him again?"
"We'll look for him, O'Donnell. We're sinking again."
"Towards the woods?"

“Meglio così: attenueremo l’urto. State attento ad aggrapparvi ai rami.”
“Vedete il piccolo bastimento?”
“Sì, sta doppiando il capo settentrionale dell’isola.”
In quell’istante il sole scomparve all’orizzonte. Il Washington precipitava sopra i grandi boschi dell’isola.
"Better that way. It will soften the blow. Get ready to cling to the branches."
"See that little ship?"
"Yes, it circumnavigates the northern cape of the island."
At that moment the sun disappeared below the horizon. The Washington crashed over the island's forests.
