Mario coperse di tante idee i poveri passeri da celarne le esili membra. Il fratello Giulio che abitava con lui, e pretendeva di amare la sua letteratura, non sapeva amarla abbastanza per includervi anche gli uccelletti. Pretendeva che mancassero d'espressione.

Mario covered the poor sparrows with so many ideas that their thin limbs were completely covered. His brother Giulio, who lived with him and pretended to love his literature, was unable to love it, which included the little birds. He claimed that they lacked expression.

Ma Mario spiegava ch'erano essi stessi un'espressione della natura, un complemento delle cose che giacciono o camminano, al disopra di esse, come l'accento sulla parola, un vero segno musicale.

But Mario explained that they are themselves an expression of nature, a complement to the things that lie or go, hovering over them like the accent over the word, a truly musical sign.

L'espressione più lieta della natura: negli uccellini neppure la paura è verde e abietta come nell'uomo, e non mica perchè celata dalle pene, chè appare anzi evidente, ma non altera in alcun modo il loro elegante organismo. Si deve anzi credere che il loro cervellino non la sappia mai.

Nature's happiest expression. Not even fear is fresh and pathetic in birds as it is in man. And not because it's covered by the feathers, which is obvious, but because it doesn't affect their elegant organism at all. One might even think that their little brains don't even know about it.

L'allarme viene dalla vista o dall'udito, e nella fretta passa direttamente alle ali. Gran bella cosa un cervellino privo di paura in un organismo in fuga! Uno degli animalucci ha trasalito? Tutti fuggono, ma in modo che pare dicano:

The alarm comes from sight or hearing and in a hurry it goes straight to the wings. How beautiful it is, a little brain relieved of every fear in an organism on the run! Has any animal ever surpassed that? Everyone flees, but in a way that says:

Ecco una buona occasione per aver paura. Non conoscono le esitazioni. Costa tanto poco fuggire quando si hanno le ali. E il volo loro è sicuro. Evitano gli ostacoli rasentandoli, ed attraversano il più fitto groviglio di rami d'alberi senza mai esserne arrestati o lesi.

This is a good way to be afraid. the fuss. It takes so little to escape when you have wings. And your flight is safe. They dodge obstacles as they approach them and traverse the densest tangle of tree branches without ever being stopped or injured.

Pensano soltanto quando son lontani, e cercano allora d'intendere la ragione della fuga, studiando i luoghi e le cose. Inclinano con grazia la testina a destra e a sinistra, e aspettano con pazienza di poter tornare al luogo donde son fuggiti.

Only when they are far away and trying to understand the reason for their flight do they think about it, study the places and the things. They gracefully tilt their heads left and right, patiently waiting to return to the place they fled from. If they felt fear every time they fled, they would all be dead.

Se ci fosse della paura ad ogni loro fuga, sarebbero morti tutti. E Mario sospettava che si procurassero ad arte tante agitazioni. Infatti potrebbero mangiare in piena calma il pane che viene loro donato, e invece essi chiudono gli occhietti maliziosi ed hanno la convinzione che ogni loro boccone è un furto.

If they felt fear every time they fled, they would all be dead. And Mario suspected they were getting that much exercise on purpose. In fact, they could calmly eat the bread that is handed to them, but they close their malicious eyes and are convinced that every bite is a theft.

Proprio così condiscono il pane asciutto. Da veri ladri non mangiano mai sul posto ove il pane è stato gettato, e là non c'è mai lite fra di loro perchè sarebbe pericoloso. La contesa per le briciole scoppia al posto ove son giunti dopo la fuga.

That’s how they season dry bread. Like thieves, they never eat their bread where it was thrown, and there is never a quarrel between them, for that would be dangerous. The quarrel breaks out at the place where they took refuge after their escape.

Grazie a tanta scoperta, stese con facilità la favola: “Un uomo generoso, regolarmente, per lunghi anni, aveva regalato ogni giorno del pane agli uccelletti, e viveva sicuro che l'animo loro fosse pieno di riconoscenza per lui.

Thanks to so much insight, this fable was easily born: "A generous man, who regularly fed bread to the birds every day, lived in the belief that their souls were filled with gratitude to him.

Non sapeva guardare costui: altrimenti si sarebbe accorto che gli uccelletti lo consideravano un imbecille cui, per tanti anni, avevano saputo rubare il pane senza che a lui fosse riuscito di catturare neppur uno di loro”.

Pare impossibile che un uomo sempre lieto com'era Mario, abbia commesso un'azione simile scrivendo questa favola. Era dunque lieto solo a fior di pelle? Ficcare tanta malizia e tanta ingiustizia nell'espressione più lieta della natura!

Equivaleva a distruggerla. Io credo anche che immaginare quell'orrenda sconoscenza dagli alati, fosse una grave offesa all'umanità, perchè se gli uccellini che non sanno parlare parlano così, come si esprimerebbero i beneficati dalla lingua lunga?

It was tantamount to destruction. I even believe that one insults humanity, if one assumes that they are so ignorant, because if the birds, which could not even speak, talked like that, how would those who started with ei equipped with a long tongue?

E intimamente tristi erano tutte le sue piccole mummie: durante la guerra diminuì sulle vie di Trieste il transito dei cavalli i quali poi erano nutriti di solo fieno. Mancavano perciò sulla via quei semi saporiti lasciati intatti dalla digestione.

E Mario si figurava di domandare ai suoi piccoli amici: “Siete alla disperazione?”. E gli uccellini rispondevano: “No, ma siamo in meno”. Voleva forse Mario abituarsi a considerare anche il proprio insuccesso nella vita come una conseguenza di circostanze che non dipendevano da lui, per sottomettersi senza dolore?

And Mario imagined asking his little friends: "Are you in despair?". And the birds answered: "No, but we are less". Did Mario want to get used to considering even his own failure in life as a consequence of circumstances that did not depend on him, to submit without pain?

La favola resta sorridente solo perchè chi legge ride. Ride di quella bestia d'uccellino che non ricorda la disperazione, vicino alla quale è vissuto alcuni certi giorni, perchè egli stesso non ne fu toccato.

The fable continued to be cheerful, but only because the one reading it was cheerful. He was amused by this animal of a bird that does not remember the despair he had lived next to for a few days because he himself was not touched by it.

Ma dopo di aver riso si pensa all'impassibile aspetto della natura quando fa i suoi esperimenti, e si rabbrividisce. Spesso la sua favola fu dedicata alla delusione che segue ad ogni opera umana. Pareva volesse consolarsi della propria assenza dalla vita dicendosi: Sto bene io che non faccio, perchè non fallo.

But after the cheerfulness is over, you think of the inevitable course of nature doing its experiments and you get chills. Often his fables were devoted to the disillusionment that follows every human work.
