VI Era vero che l'attesa non produceva delle favole, ma nei lunghi giorni che seguirono vuoti di qualsiasi avvenimento, Mario dovette riconoscere ch'essa non era monotona, perchè non uno di quei giorni somigliava a quello che l'aveva preceduto o seguito.

Sta bene che il contratto e l'assegno erano firmati, ma chissà se il brutto uomo impellicciato aveva interpretato esattamente il volere del Westermann. In fondo quell'individuo che non sapeva che il tedesco non era altro che la traduzione del Gaia italiano. Poteva perciò avere sbagliato.

Mario aveva una certa esperienza degli affari e, bisogna riconoscerlo, aveva anche una certa esperienza di belle lettere. Quello che assolutamente ignorava, erano gli affari nel campo dei prodotti letterari. Solo perciò non arrivava a scoprire la burla.

Mario had some experience in business and, it must be admitted, he had some experience in poetry as well. But what he had absolutely no knowledge of was the business with literary products. That alone is why he didn't realize it was a hoax.

Se non si fosse trattato di letteratura, egli mai più avrebbe ammesso che un uomo pratico d'affari come doveva essere il Westermann, avesse offerto tanti denari per una cosa che avrebbe potuto ottenere tanto più a buon mercato, per esempio per la piccola somma prestata dal Brauer.

Poichè quella somma Mario la doveva, e non ammetteva più che egli avrebbe concesso il romanzo magari per niente. Ma forse negli affari letterari si usava così, e nell'editore c'era anche l'umanità del mecenate. E Giulio, dal suo letto innocente, aiutava a dissipare i dubbii di Mario.

Because Mario actually owed this sum and he no longer accepted that he might have sold the novel for nothing. But maybe that's how it worked in the literature market and the publisher was also a kind of patron. Guilio, from his innocent bed, helped dispel Mario's doubts.

Le acute riflessioni di Giulio bastavano a rendere più lieta qualche ora di Mario. Poi ricadeva nell'eccitazione dell'attesa. Si trovava in uno stato che ricordava l'epoca seguita alla pubblicazione del suo romanzo.

Giulio's sharp-eyed thoughts were enough to cheer Mario up. Then he lapsed back into the fickleness of waiting. He was at a stage similar to that following the publication of his first novel.

Anche allora l'attesa del successo - che dapprima gli era sembrato sicuro quanto adesso il contratto col Westermann - aveva imperversato sulla sua vita facendone una tortura insopportabile persino nel ricordo.

Back then too, waiting for success, which at first seemed as certain to him as the contract with Westermann now, had thrown his life upside down, so that even remembering it is torture.

Ma allora, data la forza della gioventù, l'attesa non aveva insidiato il suo sonno e il suo appetito. E benchè dovesse credersi in pieno successo, il povero Mario stava facendo l'esperienza che dopo i sessant'anni non bisognava occuparsi più di letteratura, perchè poteva divenire una pratica molto dannosa alla salute.

But then, because of the vigor of youth, waiting had not besieged his sleep and his appetite. And although he believed himself to be crowned with success, Mario found that one should no longer concern himself with literature because it could become an activity that was harmful to one's health.
