La presunzione di Mario non faceva del male a nessuno, e sarebbe stato umano di lasciargliela. Giulio la tutelava tanto bene che con lui Mario non arrossiva neppure quando s'accorgeva d'averla manifestata.

Mario's presumption did no harm to anyone, and it would have been humane to leave it to him. Giulio looked after it so well that Mario didn't blush with him, not even when he realized he had revealed it.

Anzi Giulio l'aveva intesa tanto bene da adottarla con più chiarezza che non ci fosse in Mario stesso. Anche lui, dinanzi ai terzi, si guardava dal proclamare la sua fede nel genio del fratello, ma senza sforzo, solo per conformarsi a quanto vedeva fare da Mario stesso.

Indeed Giulio had understood it so well as to adopt it with more clarity than it was in Mario himself.He too, before third parties, was careful not to proclaim his faith in his brother's genius, but effortlessly, only to conform to what he saw Mario himself doing.

E Mario sorrideva dell'ammirazione del fratello, non sapendo ch'era stato lui che gliel'aveva insegnata. Ma ne godeva, e la stanza dove l'ammalato passava il suo tempo fra letto e lettuccio, era un posto raro a questo mondo perchè Mario vi trovava una pace ch'egli diceva silenzio e raccoglimento, mentre era qualche cosa che più fortunati di lui trovavano in luoghi specialmente rumorosi.

And Mario smiled at his brother's admiration, not knowing that it was he who had taught it to him. But he enjoyed it, and the room where the sick man spent his time between bed and cot was a rare place in this world because Mario found there a peace that he called silence and recollection, while it was something that people more lucky as he find in especially noisy places.

Piena di gloria, quella stanza conteneva poche altre cose. Un desco leggero che veniva spostato dal centro, ove i due fratelli prendevano la colazione, ad un cantuccio accanto al letto ove desinavano.

Full of glory, that room contained few other things. A light table that was moved from the center, where the two brothers ate breakfast, to a corner next to the bed where they dined.

Da poco tempo in quella stanza da pranzo era stato posto il letto di Giulio. Durante la guerra il combustibile era caro, eppoi quella era la stanza più calda della casa, per cui l'ammalato, durante l'inverno, non l'abbandonava mai.

Giulio's bed had recently been placed in that dining room. During the war fuel was expensive, and besides that it was the warmest room in the house, so the sick person never left it during the winter.

Nelle lunghe sere invernali, in quella stanza, il poeta sosteneva il gottoso ed il gottoso confortava il poeta. La somiglianza di tale rapporto con quello dello zoppo e del cieco è evidente.

In the long winter evenings, in that room, the poet supported the gouty and the gouty comforted the poet. The similarity of this relationship with that of the lame and the blind is evident.

Per un caso singolare i due vecchi ch'erano stati sempre poveri, non ebbero a sopportare delle grandi sofferenze durante la guerra che fu tanto dura a tutti i Triestini.

By a singular case, the two old men who had always been poor, did not have to bear great suffering during the war which was so hard on all Trieste.

I loro disagi furono diminuiti da una grande simpatia che Mario seppe ispirare ad uno slavo del contado e che si manifestò in doni di frutta, uova e pollame.

Their hardships were diminished by a great sympathy that Mario was able to inspire in a Slav from the countryside and which manifested itself in gifts of fruit, eggs and poultry.

Si vede da questo successo del letterato italiano che mai ne aveva avuti altri, che la nostra letteratura prospera meglio all'estero che da noi. Peccato che Mario non seppe apprezzare quel successo che altrimenti gli avrebbe fatto bene.

It is clear from this success of the Italian man of letters that no other has ever had, that our literature prospers better abroad than at home. Too bad Mario didn't know how to appreciate that success which otherwise would have done him good.

Accettava e mangiava volentieri i doni, ma gli pareva che la generosità del contadino fosse dovuta alla sua ignoranza e che il successo con gli ignoranti spesso si chiama truffa. Si sentiva perciò pesare il cuore, e per difendere il buon umore e l'appetito ricorse alla favola:

He gladly accepted and ate the gifts, but it seemed to him that the peasant's generosity was due to his ignorance and that success with the ignorant is often called cheating. He therefore felt his heart weigh down, and to defend his good mood and appetite he resorted to the fable:

Ad un uccellino furono offerti dei pezzi di pane troppo grandi per il suo beccuccio. Con piccolo resultato l'uccellino s'accanì per vari giorni intorno alla preda. Fu ancora peggio quando il pane indurì, perchè allora l'uccellino dovette rinunciare al ristoro offertogli.

A little bird was offered pieces of bread too big for its spout. With little result, the bird raged for several days around the prey. It was even worse when the bread hardened, because then the little bird had to give up the refreshment offered to it.

Volò via pensando: L'ignoranza del benefattore è la sventura del beneficato. Solo la morale della favola s'adattava esattamente al caso del contadino. Il resto era stato alterato tanto bene dall'ispirazione, che il contadino non vi si sarebbe ravvisato, e questo era lo scopo principale della favola.

He flew away thinking: The benefactor's ignorance is the benefactor's misfortune. Only the moral of the story suited the peasant's case exactly. The rest had been altered so well by inspiration that the peasant would not have recognized himself in it, and this was the main purpose of the fable.

C'era stato lo sfogo e non andava a colpire il contadino, proprio come non lo meritava. Perciò studiandola si scopre nella favola una manifestazione di riconoscenza, benchè non forte. I due fratelli vivevano con rigida regolarità.

There had been an outburst and it wasn't going to hit the farmer, just like he didn't deserve it. Therefore, studying it, one discovers in the fable a manifestation of gratitude, albeit not a strong one. The two brothers lived with strict regularity.

Non sconvolse le loro abitudini neppure la guerra che disordinò tutto il resto del mondo. Giulio lottava da anni e con buon successo contro la gotta che gli minacciava il cuore. Andando a letto di buon'ora, e contando i bocconi che si concedeva, il vecchio, di buon umore, diceva:

Not even the war, which messed up the rest of the world, upset their habits. Giulio had been fighting for years and with good success against the gout that was threatening his heart. Going to bed early, and counting the morsels he allowed himself, the old man, in a good mood, said:

“Vorrei sapere se, tenendomi vivo, truffo la vita o la morte”. Non era un letterato costui, ma si vede che, ripetendo ogni giorno le stesse azioni, si finisce con lo spremerne tutto lo spirito che ne può scaturire. Perciò all'uomo comune non è mai raccomandata abbastanza la vita regolata.

"I would like to know whether, by keeping myself alive, I am cheating life or death." He was not a man of letters, but it is clear that, by repeating the same actions every day, one ends up squeezing out all the spirit that can flow from them. Therefore, a regulated life can never be recommended enough to the common man.

Giulio, d'inverno, si coricava proprio col sole, e d'estate molto prima di esso. Nel letto caldo le sue sofferenze s'attenuavano ed egli lo abbandonava ogni giorno per alcune ore, unicamente per conformarsi al volere del medico. La cena era servita accanto al suo letto, e i due fratelli la prendevano insieme.

Giulio, in winter, went to bed right with the sun, and in summer long before it. In the warm bed his sufferings eased and he abandoned it every day for a few hours, solely to comply with the doctor's wishes. Dinner was served beside his bed, and the two brothers ate it together.

Era condita da un grande affetto, l'affetto ereditato dalla loro prima giovinezza. Mario era per Giulio sempre molto giovine, e Giulio per Mario il vecchio che avrebbe saputo consigliarlo in ogni evenienza.

It was seasoned with a great affection, the affection inherited from their early youth. Mario was always very young to Giulio, and Giulio to Mario was the old man who would know how to advise him in any eventuality.

Giulio non s'accorgeva quanto Mario gli andasse somigliando nella prudenza e nella lentezza, come se avesse avuto la gotta anche lui, e Mario non vedeva che il vecchio fratello ormai non poteva dargli consigli, non avrebbe mai detto cosa che non fosse stata spiata dal suo proprio desiderio.

Giulio didn't realize how much Mario resembled him in prudence and slowness, as if he too had gout, and Mario didn't see that his old brother couldn't give him advice now, he would never have said anything if he hadn't been spied on by the his own desire.

Era anche giusto: non si trattava di consigliare o d'ammonire; bisognava sostenere e incoraggiare. Ciò riusciva anche più facile a un gottoso, per quanto non sembri.

It was also just: it wasn't a question of advising or admonishing; it was necessary to support and encourage. This was even easier for a gouty person, although it doesn't seem like it.

E quando Mario concludeva l'esposizione di una sua idea, di una sua speranza o intenzione con le parole: “Ti pare?” a Giulio assolutamente pareva, e consentiva convinto.

And when Mario concluded the exposition of his idea, his hope or intention with the words: "Do you think?" it seemed absolutely to Giulio, and he agreed with conviction.

Perciò per ambedue la letteratura era una bonissima cosa, e la parca cena era migliore, condita da un mite affetto sicuro, che escludeva qualsiasi dissenso.

Therefore for both literature was a very good thing, and the cheap dinner was better, seasoned with a safe mild affection, which excluded any dissent.
