But at first, not even during the brief moments of light, did he ever think of rising so high as to reject the success that offered him. The voice of Epicurus, weakened by the distance in time, preached in vain: "Live in secret!".

He craved notoriety, like all those who think they can attain it, and he was sick of the long, futile wait. Gaia was surprised and annoyed that Mario didn't spread the joke himself.

He didn't do it himself because he didn't want to further compress himself and because he didn't think it was necessary any more. He even expected it to be published in some local newspaper by a friend of Mario's. What kind of writer was Mario if he wasn't running around town to announce his success?

Busy as he was, Gaia didn't find the time to meet Mario to make him chat and enjoy himself. The joke, which had been so long in coming with its fruits, was present for him, a promise of well-deserved joy.

One evening, returning from a tiring journey in a little carriage on the small, slow and therefore long railway line from Istria, he stopped for several hours in a pub to drink with some friends. And just as the wine was supposed to make him forget the heat of the little carts, so too he remembered the joke to free himself from the memories of the boring business.

As he told it, he had an idea that delighted him. He suggested that one of those present who knew the Samigli should go to Mario and propose, on behalf of another German publisher, the purchase of the book at an even higher price than that paid by Westermann and with a contract that forced the publisher to to publish the novel immediately.

He roared with laughter at the thought of how sad Mario would be because he was already tied to Westermann. Those present found the joke vile and refused to cooperate, and Gaia declined, but took a promise from them that they would not tell the two brothers anything that had been said that evening.

Then he stopped thinking about what was the easiest thing in the world for him. The first joke had amused him immensely, and more amusement was to come from this, if only for the pleasure of witnessing Mario's pain and perhaps what he called the healing of all his pride. It seemed easy for him to evade any reproach.

Westermann's representative was merely a traveling salesman who was in Trieste on the day Austria dissolved there, which condemned him to inactivity and made him inclined to take part in such a merry banter. Now he was far from Trieste and Gaia could have claimed that he too had been duped.

He admitted that Mario could have had enough sense to laugh at the joke as well, but that wasn't particularly likely because the people who left fame can't laugh, but if Mario could rise to such heights , then he would have been able to become his worthy comrade and he could then, in all friendship, have a drink with him. But he had made a big mistake.

One of his friends never spoke to anyone except his own family, and one of his sons, whom he sometimes sent to inquire about the Samigli, told Giulio roughly what he had learned.

He said that Gaia had pranked Mario into believing that a theater director Giostermann had signed on to perform one of his comedies. The whole thing was so wrong that at first Giulio thought it was something else and not about Mario.
