Questo il proposito cui si attenne rigidamente, e non si accorse che per la pace dell'ammalato sarebbe stato meglio di non attendere l'arrivo del lento Westermann. Infatti Giulio soffriva. Anche quando Mario si rifece affabile e discorsivo, egli non seppe dimenticare le offese che gli erano state fatte.

That was the suggestion he was anxious to follow, and he didn't realize that it would have been better for the patient's peace not to wait for the slow-moving Westermann to arrive. Giulio was indeed suffering. Even as Mario became more talkative and affable, he was unable to forget the insults done to him.

Prima di tutto non c'erano state quelle spiegazioni dalle quali proprio le persone deboli (che le parole amano tanto) s'attendono la regolazione di ogni divergenza, eppoi non s'era più ritornati alla loro antica, cara abitudine della lettura serale.

On the one hand, the pronounciation, from which the weak people (who love words so much) hope to settle all differences of opinion, had not yet taken place, and on the other hand, they had not yet returned to the so dear habit of reading in the evening.

Paventava però le spiegazioni solo perchè in quelle già avute s'era dimostrato tanto debole. E per averle senza dover parlare, pensò di sostituire le parole con un atto energico: ostentativamente cessò di curarsi e sperò che Mario se ne sarebbe accorto e doluto. Invece Mario non s'accorse di nulla, forse perchè la dimostrazione durò troppo poco.

He feared the pronounciation not only because he had shown himself so weak in the one that had already taken place. And in order to bring about this without having to speak, he thought of replacing the words with energetic action: he ostentatiously refused to get well and hoped that Mario would notice and regret it. However, Mario didn't notice anything, perhaps because the demonstration didn't last long enough.

L'ammalato s'era sentito subito peggio, e, spaventato, era ritornato ai suoi medicamenti, che però gli fecero meno bene. Come può agire beneficamente un medicinale ch'è stato tanto disprezzato? Ed è così che Giulio, incapace d'azioni, ritornò alla parola, che dedicò però solo all'azione che aveva tentata e non compita.

After a short time, the patient felt worse and was frightened and went back to his medication, which was not doing him as well. How can a drug work that has been so despised? And so it happened that Giulio, incapable of action, returned to words, which he devoted only to the action he had attempted but failed to complete.

Una sera, con un sorriso mite e senza guardare in faccia Mario, disse interrompendo la cena per prendere certe polverette: “Contro ogni buon senso io continuo a curarmi, come vedi”.

One night, he said while pausing dinner to take certain powders with a shy smile and without looking Mario in the face: "Contrary to all logic, as you can see, my healing is progressing."

Mario, che da grand'uomo quale si sentiva, dava meno peso alla disputa avuta, di cui non restava altra traccia che la grande comodità di non far la lettura serale, si meravigliò, e ad alta voce proclamò il dovere di Giulio di curarsi per guarire, come se egli a voce anche più alta non avesse detto il contrario pochi giorni prima.

Mario, quite the great man he thought he was, did not attach such weight to the earlier quarrel, of which no other trace remained than the pleasant fact that there was no more evening reading, was surprised and proclaimed in a loud voice that it was Giulio's duty to take care of himself in order to heal, just as he had claimed the opposite in an even louder voice not a few days earlier.

Era troppo poco per rabbonire Giulio. Mario non se ne avvide; solo si divertì a osservare che Giulio ingoiando la polveretta sciolta nell'acqua, aveva l'aspetto di un bambino ostinato. Pareva dicesse: “Io mi curo, io ho il diritto di curarmi, ed ho anche il dovere di farlo”.

That was not enough to make Giulio more kind. Mario didn't take it seriously. He just amused himself by observing that Giulio, drinking the powder dissolved in water, looked like a stubborn child. He looked as if to say: "I take care of myself, I have the right to take care of myself and I also have the duty to do so".

A un letterato basta un solo atteggiamento per costruire tutta una persona con gli arti necessari per prendere tale atteggiamento ed anche altre membra che vi sieno utili. La costruisce, ma non ci crede, e l'ama specialmente se può crederla una propria immaginazione che sappia però moversi sulla terra reale ed essere illuminata dal sole di ogni giorno.

For a writer, one attitude is enough to make a whole person out of it, with the skills needed to construct that attitude and other limbs that served it. He constructs them but doesn't believe in them, and he loves them especially when he can pass off his own invention that could still move in the real world and be lit by the sun of the day.

E se tale costruzione esiste già, egli non se ne accorge neppure, perchè ciò non ha alcuna importanza per il suo pensiero.

And if such a construction already exists, then he doesn't even notice it, because it has no meaning for his world of thought.

E Mario per atteggiare ragionevolmente il volto del suo fantasma a tanta ostinazione, sostituì a Giulio, ch'egli credeva non ricordasse nemmeno le sue parole, una persona più forte benchè non meno malata, e che gridava il suo diritto di vivere proprio quella vita nel suo letto caldo, e di essere aiutato dalle medicine e anche dalla lettura, come la voleva lui.

Mario, in an effort to reconcile the face of the product of his imagination with so much stubbornness, replaced Giulio, whom he thought couldn't even remember his words, with a stronger, if no less sick, person and who vociferously insisted on her right to spend her life in her warm bed, supported by medicine and literature, just as he wished.

E Mario amò la propria creatura: quella debolezza e quell'ostinazione e tanta rassegnazione. Quello scorcio di figura era un'illustrazione della vita povera, sofferente, ma ancora capace di difendere tanta povertà e tanto dolore.

Mario loved his creation: This weakness and this stubbornness, the resignation. This cut out of a figure was an illustration of miserable, suffering life, yet able to defend so much poverty and so much pain.
